The iPhone Developer's Cookbook: Building Applications with the iPhone 3.0 SDK (2nd Edition)

Great Price "The iPhone Developer's Cookbook: Building Applications with the iPhone 3.0 SDK (2nd Edition)" for $25.68 Today

It can be very frustrating trying to step into the iPhone/iPad world. There are plenty of "Hello World" examples, but after that it starts getting very confusing very quickly.

Worse, some of what you'll find is out of date - the SDK is a constantly moving target and even if it were not, there are so many different ways to accomplish the same goal that it's very hard to know what the best approach is for your particular project(s).

I suppose this book is already out of date. I'm still going to recommend it, because it really helped clear up some things I was very confused about.

The author doesn't recommend this as a rank beginners book. You'll need some "Hello, world" experience first and perhaps a bit more. However, I'd recommend buying this at the same time as you buy those getting started books because the first hundred and fifty pages or so really will help you understand things the beginners books don't mention at all.

I read the negative reviews and I understand that there may be flaws here from the viewpoint of more experienced or more pedantic reviewers. That's OK - Erica's book helped me and I'm quite sure it would help others.

By the way, because I've reviewed so many books and maintain a large technically oriented website, I often get books like this free as reviewer copies. This isn't one of those: I paid for it and definitely feel that it was worth the price.

The Best I ever bought, and superb service from Amazon! - Daniel Bonates - Brasil
I had the best experience in my life about buying books when I did it for this book, on this site. I receive a great support for tracking the shipment and as soon I got the book, I started to eat it. Its very impressive how the author seems to know exactly what you are working on, and what you need and to be perfect, teach you the best and short way to get what you want. This book is not for beginners, but intermediate instead and advanced. Wonderful and I recommend it a lot...

Sams Teach Yourself iPhone Application Development in 24 Hours

Great Price "Sams Teach Yourself iPhone Application Development in 24 Hours" for $19.99 Today

This book is well balanced between drive and explanation, as (almost) all other books on the subject you have to know (some) programming thinking already. To a total newbie the book would be useless and that is why I think the title is a bit stupid. It's not a matter of learning the process from one day to the other but if you read the book carefully and use 24 separate 1 hour sessions, you should end a lot wiser.

It will learn you how to program the iPhone yes, will it teach you the nuts and bolts of iPhone programming, no!

My recommandation is that this book is great for looking up stuff, but to get complete knowing of the iPhone and application development you need more than this.

More time debugging their code than reading the book... - Michael McGrath -
As others have commented, the first twelve-to-fourteen chapters are excellent. They did an good job teaching the basics with very understandable examples. However, right around the fourteenth chapter everything falls apart. They start feeding you code without a lot of detailed explanation. Many of the example projects are just flat out broken because of the typos and lack of direction. I am amazed that they didn't take time to quality check their book before publishing it. Very, very sloppy.

With that said, if you do pick up this book make sure you also download the example code from their website because it will be VITAL in order to compare their broken mess that they had you type in to something that actually works. You might want to skip typing in their code altogether and just follow along with the downloaded examples. You also just might want to skip this book entirely and find something written with a little more care.

Download the errata FIRST! - Donovan Reeve -
I have been able to get all of the examples through the first 14 chapters to work. I have at least a dozen iPhone books and think comparatively this is the best or second best starter book (O'Reilly's Head First is good too). Most chapters do take more than an hour(Of course I'm learning Objective-C at the same time). I also like the fact that this is the first book to show you how to get examples on to your own iPod Touch from the beginning of the book instead of telling you to just use the X-Code simulator. but (and this is a big but) DOWNLOAD THE ERRATA from the Sams website first. It will save you a lot of frustration.

My "Go To" Reference - David A. Hardin - Round Top, TX USA
I found this book invaluable in learning the iPhone SDK ... highly recommended! Helped me immensely in getting my first iPad app into the store on launch date.

Very well structured book for learning iPhone Dev. - Xeon Xai - Sarasota, FL USA
I read this book after reading the Learn C on the Mac (Learn Series) and Learn Objective–C on the Mac (Learn Series) books. It was very well structured and gives reference to online documents and websites for further reading of the parts it doesn't cover directly. I've continued on to the next book after this, written by the same author(s) and have been buying many other Apress books on the subject of iPhone development. Reading this book will keep you in the right direction for developing software for the iPhone that you want to submit to the App Store.

    Programming in Objective-C 2.0 (2nd Edition)

Great Price "Programming in Objective-C 2.0 (2nd Edition)" for $26.22 Today

This book is in many ways a gold mine of knowledge. From my college engineering days, I had to learn many computer languages such as Fortran and C++. However, as the old quip goes, use it or lose it.

For years I had wanted to begin programming again because I enjoyed doing so, but the real question remained: What is the optimal approach to do so that would best utilize my prior knowledge AND bridge the gap to todays world of programming in Objective-C? Fortunately for me, I discovered Mr. Kochan's book and it was indeed the bridge that I sought. (Oddly enough, the cover on this book has a bridge on it. Go figure ...)

As most things in life go, the real significance of this book was not obvious at the onset. However, after glancing through the book, it was immediately clear to me that (A): The author took great pains to cover all the nuances of Objective-C in great detail so that anyone could understand them, and (B): The author is more than qualified to illuminate the subject matter and easily educate those that take the time to read his book and work all the examples.

For instance, I had wondered for years what an 'object' actually was that made Objective-C so special as compared to C and C++. Mr. Kochan's car example made this so succinctly clear that I wondered why all the other books I have never even came close to clarifying this important point. The other authors chose instead to define an object in abstract terms (generally speaking) which was not much help at all. Granted, the other books were about Xcode and Cocoa. However, without having a clear understanding as to what an 'object' is, how is anyone trying to learn Cocoa or Xcode going to move forward since 'objects' are both the building blocks and the future of both Cocoa and Xcode?

"Oh, and one more thing". To the unfamiliar, that is Steve Jobs' famous on-stage line when introducing new Apple products or software. A few weeks back I discovered that Mr. Kochan has a web site [...] based on learning Objective-C, - chapter by chapter. Upon making this discovery, I was at once elated to find the site and annoyed that no mention of this was made in the book. Perhaps the book was published before the website was built, but regardless this website is an INVALUABLE resource for learning Objective-C. And, from experience, Mr. Kochan will respond to your queries and comments within a day and oftentimes, within a few hours. How he does this, I have no idea, but he does.

My book did not come with a video CD, so I cannot comment on that. Speaking only for myself, I prefer a book over a video because I can re-read any part of a book much easier than I can a video. The web site does have video content for those so interested.

And least anyone wonder, I have absolutely no connection to Mr. Kochan. Period. But, I will forever be grateful to him for writing this book and creating and participating in his website. Both are indispensable sources for learning Objective-C.

Bottom line: I cannot recommend this book highly enough to those wishing to begin programming in Objective-C or to those who have past programming experience and wish to learn Objective-C. At twice the price, this book would still be a steal.

    Programming in Objective-C 2.0 (2nd Edition) Overviews

    THE #1 BESTSELLING BOOK ON OBJECTIVE-C 2.0

Programming in Objective-C 2.0 provides the new programmer a complete, step-by-step introduction to Objective-C, the primary language used to develop applications for the iPhone, iPad, and Mac OS X platforms.

The book does not assume previous experience with either C or object-oriented programming languages, and it includes many detailed, practical examples of how to put Objective-C to use in your everyday iPhone/iPad or Mac OS X programming tasks.

A powerful yet simple object-oriented programming language that’s based on the C programming language, Objective-C is widely available not only on OS X and the iPhone/iPad platform but across many operating systems that support the gcc compiler, including Linux, Unix, and Windows systems.

The second edition of this book thoroughly covers the latest version of the language, Objective-C 2.0. And it shows not only how to take advantage of the Foundation framework’s rich built-in library of classes but also how to use the iPhone SDK to develop programs designed for the iPhone/iPad platform.

All programming instructional books should be written this way - Interpol - Los Angeles, CA
I'm currently only 4 chapters into the Kindle version of this book and so far I can honestly say I've been able to learn more about Objective C than any other book. I have a background in computer science and have learned various programming languages such as BASIC, Pascal, LISP, Scheme, Java, even assembly - but I never got around to learning C or any of its variants. I've consumed many instructional books on programming and can honestly say that this one is the most well-written and easily comprehensible out of all of them. The author takes great care to explain virtually every aspect of Objective C syntax and does it in a way that's comfortable for both neophytes as well as those who have had some prior programming experience.

Additionally, the Kindle version of this book is done very well, easily readable on the Kindle device or an iPad (I've been reading it on both). When it's displayed on the iPad (with the Kindle app), you also get the additional benefit of color illustrations. Although I have a long way to go in this book, I can already say that I will have no problem reading it on my PC, my Kindle, or my iPad.

If you're interested in developing apps for the iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad, start with this book to give yourself a decent understanding of the Objective-C language, and THEN read the more iPhone OS-specific programming books such as "Head First iPhone Development" and "iPhone Application Development for Dummies". I tried to start with the Head First book and pretty much went nowhere with it until I started reading "Programming in Objective-C 2.0". Now concepts are starting to come together and I'm excited about what I can start doing with the iPhone SDK.

A pick for any advanced developer's library - Midwest Book Review - Oregon, WI USA
The second edition of Programming in Objective-C 2.0: A Complete Introduction to the Objective-C Language for Mac OS X and iPhone Development is a pick for any advanced developer's library. It tells of a language that has become the standard for application development on the Mac OS X and iPhone platforms, and provides new programmers with step-by-step introductions to its language and use. This second edition has been updated and expanded to cover Objective C 2.0 and is a pick for any developer's collection.

iPhone for Programmers: An App-Driven Approach (Deitel Developer Series)

iPhone for Programmers: An App-Driven Approach (Deitel Developer Series) Review

In the process of learning a new computer language or software development environment, I have found that multiple books are needed, each with a different focus: a good intro book with simple examples (Beginning iPhone 3 Development), a great language reference book (Programming in Objective-C), and a first-class advanced applications/topics book. This book, iPhone for Programmers: An App-Driven Approach, is the first-class advanced applications/topics book in my set.

Chapter 2 describes the process that follows the design step for an app: testing the app on an iPhone/Touch device, preparation for submission, pricing, managing, and marketing your newly created app. Chapter 2 lists common characteristics of great iPhone/Touch apps. Some of the reasons that may cause an app to be rejected by Apple are also described. Chapter 2 is a much appreciated chapter and a rare topic for an application programming book.

For the next fourteen chapters, example apps are provided; one per chapter. The apps look good enough to be listed on the app store. Each of the chapters follows a consistent organizational structure: Introduction, Test-driving the App, Overview of the Technologies, Building the App, and Wrap-up.

On the page just before the Table of Contents is a listing of the topics available at the resource center on the authors' website. The resource center is an extensive collection of well-organized current information about computer languages, internet business, open source, programming, and web2.0. This is definitely not your typical book-support website.

Although I am still working my way through the last few chapters, I am pleased with the depth of technical material and the variety of real application examples. After learning the basics, nothing beats further learning than developing, compiling and debugging your own code to create your own software application. It is also the most humbling part of the learning process. Dare to dream...

    Customer Review

Heavily annotated code, no fluff - Peter J. Neame - Tampa, FL
This is not a book for beginners - there isn't much about C-programming, or even about cocoa programming as such. You are expected to have a reasonable grasp of OOP, dot-notation and square brackets and all. What there is is very detailed annotated code for applications that you might actually use. Perhaps the code is over-annotated for some, but I found it very helpful to have a detailed, line-by-line description for those "what's going on here" moments. And in the body of the text, there is a further description of what and why.
A great book that seems to have given me enough "Aha!" moments to make me feel confident of producing something useful.
My only quibble would be that some flow diagrams would have helped. However, given the "style" of the code, which doesn't use interface builder very much, if at all, it's fairly straightforward to build your own diagrams. It is a matter of personal preference as to whether interface builder should be used or whether it's better to wire an application up in code - both may "break" with Apple upgrades/changes, so it is important to understand both approaches. And you can always get a diagram in Xcode.
    Strongly recommended.

Iphone for programmers: App Driven Approach - E. Tompkins - Flroida
Excellent book for learning to program iphone apps. complete source code to 14 great apps. This book has a little bit of everything, with knowledge gained you should have no trouble creating a great app for iphone.
